When to See a Doctor for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common but painful condition that can make it hard to move throughout your daily activities. At Hampton Roads Foot and Ankle Specialists in Hampton and Williamsburg, VA, we understand plantar fasciitis and are here to work with you to find the solutions that provide lasting relief. Let's take a look at what plantar fasciitis is, as well as the different treatment options that can help you get back to feeling your best.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that stretches along the bottom of your foot, connecting the toes to the heel bone. Plantar fasciitis occurs when this tissue becomes inflamed. Often, this inflammation causes pain in the heel and arch of the foot, which can make it difficult to exercise, walk, and even get out of bed in the morning.

While plantar fasciitis symptoms can differ from person to person, many people find that their symptoms are at their worst first thing in the morning. Many people also experience intensified symptoms after long periods of standing or sitting.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

There are several factors that can cause plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Overuse or Strain: Activities like running, walking, or standing for long periods can cause plantar fasciitis
  • Foot Structure: Flat feet, high arches, or abnormal walking patterns can affect the way weight is distributed, increasing strain on the plantar fascia
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts additional stress on the feet
  • Age: The condition is most common in people between 40 and 60 years old
  • Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes with poor arch support or soft soles makes the development of plantar fasciitis more likely

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

When you come into our office for plantar fasciitis treatment, we'll start by talking with you about your symptoms and thoroughly examining your foot or feet. From there, we'll develop a comprehensive treatment plan to relieve your symptoms. While treatment plans differ from person to person, many people who experience plantar fasciitis find relief with a combination of rest, ice, stretching exercises, custom orthotics, and physical therapy.

If our first-line-of-defense treatments don't relieve your symptoms, we'll talk about other options, which may include medications, injections, or surgery. At each appointment, we'll talk about your progress and adjust your treatment plan as necessary.
